pilchard: translation
Sardina pilchardus, a member of the family Clupeidae and an important food fish. Many terms were associated with the fishery for this species, particularly in Cornwall in southwest England. These terms in Cornish dialect are now archaic. The season in Cornwall lasts from June until the following March, and is carried out by fishing boats, regulated by size. Traditional drift or ring nets with a species specific mesh size are fished for a few hours in the evening, icing the catch as it is caught, before landing later the same evening. See also sardine
