ALGIERS AGREEMENT

   In March 1975, Iraq and Iran signed an agreement in Algiers under which Iran halted its support for the revolt of Mulla Mustafa Barzani in return for joint usage of the Shatt al-Arab River. Without Iranian aid, Barzani's longtime on-again, off-again revolt quickly collapsed, and the great Kurdish leader was forced into exile, where he died in 1979. The Algiers Agreement is still remembered by Kurds as a great disaster and evidence of foreign betrayal.
