1. [subord conj; introduces a clause of purpose]
⇒ for the purpose of (achieving sth. or, when used with a negation, preventing sth.; what is stated in the main clause usu. presents an extreme means of achieving the goal stated in the subord clause):

- [when used with a negation](in order) to avoid (doing sth.).

2. [subord Conj, condit]
⇒ used to show that the truthfulness or realization of what is stated in the main clause is contingent upon the fulfillment of the condition stated in the subord clause; the fulfillment of this condition is considered desirable:
- as <so> long as;
- if (only);
- provided that.
♦ ...Мужикам, по их натуре, нужна любая техника, лишь бы она была новой, любая теория, лишь бы она сводила какие-нибудь концы с какими-нибудь другими концами... (Залыгин 1).
