Polish: from an old Slavonic personal name composed of the elements bog god + mil grace, favour. St Bogumił (d. 1182) was an archbishop of Gniezno (Gnesen) who founded the abbey of Koronowa. His cult was not officially approved by the Church until 1925, but it flourished nevertheless during seven centuries of turbulence and repression, sometimes serving as a symbol of Polish national and spiritual aspirations.
