The process and the result of pooling financial assets together and issuing liability and equity obligations backed by the resulting pool of assets to convert those assets into marketable securities. The underlying assets are usually, but always, non-marketable by themselves. Any type of financial asset can be securitized. Securitized mortgage obligations may be called mortgage backed securities or collateralized mortgage obligations. Securitized non-mortgage assets are typically called asset backed securities however the term collateralized debt obligation is increasingly used to refer to securitized corporate debts. A single loan or groups of similar loans may be securitized. Loans to be securitized must usually be underwritten with terms and documents that conform to wholesale market standards. For some securitizations, additional credit support, called credit enhancement, may be obtained through insurance, a letter of credit, over collateralization or other means. Many securitizations use multi-tranche structures that allocate the principal and interest cash flows from the underlying assets in patterns that create higher and lower risk securities.

B. Certificates of Deposit, Euronotes, Euro commercial papers im kurzfristigen beziehungsweise Floating rate notes, Zerobonds, Genussscheine im langfristigen Bereich). Solche Wertpapierformen werden auch von den Banken selbst emittiert oder übernommen (u. a. im Rahmen ihres Eigengeschäfts). Diese Tendenz zur Securitization ist seit Anfang der 1980er-Jahre v. a. auf den internationalen Finanzmärkten zu beobachten, während sie die Finanzierungsstrukturen am deutschen Geld- und Kapitalmarkt nur graduell verändert hat.

The process through which an issuer creates a financial instrument by combining other financial assets and then marketing different tiers of the repackaged instruments to investors. The process can encompass any type of financial asset and promotes liquidity in the marketplace.

Mortgage-backed securities are a perfect example of securitization. By combining mortgages into one large pool, the issuer can divide the large pool into smaller pieces based on each individual mortgage's inherent risk of default and then sell those smaller pieces to investors.

The process creates liquidity by enabling smaller investors to purchase shares in a larger asset pool. Using the mortgage-backed security example, individual retail investors are able to purchase portions of a mortgage as a type of bond. Without the securitization of mortgages, retail investors may not be able to afford to buy into a large pool of mortgages.

Банк занимает деньги у сберегателей (инвесторов) и ссужает их заемщикам, взимая за обе операции плату, наряду с начислениями процентов. Наличие у заемщика возможности получить деньги непосредственно от инвесторов путем выпуска и размещения среди них облигаций (или акций) позволяет снизить издержки как заемщиков, так и кредиторов. Секьюритизация получила распространение в 1980-х гг. с развитием технологии и новых форм инвестирования.
