   German rabbi and educator. After teaching in Jerusalem, he founded a Hebrew high school in Kovno, Lithuania. He then succeeded his father, Solomon Carlebach, as rabbi of Lübeck. He became chief rabbi of Altona and later of Hamburg. He published commentaries on the Song of Songs, the Prophets and Ecclesiastes, as well as a study of Levi ben Gershon.
