English (rare): from a Germanic personal name composed of the elements ala all or ali stranger + rīc power, ruler, which was introduced to Britain in this form by the Normans. The first element may also in part derive from a contracted form of the element adal noble. The Blessed Alaricus or Adalricus (d. 975) was a Swabian prince who became a monk at the monastery of Einsiedeln in Switzerland.
