Carpet knight: translation

The body of knights who attended the monarch in the more private spaces, rather than the public, communal hall; also, part of the transformation of the royal court from a military to a civil establishment. Later, it was a term of disparagement for a knight dubbed at court rather than on the field of battle; hence an idle man, a ladies' man.
