ENDOSYMBIONT HYPOTHESIS
The hypothesis that semi-autonomous organelles such as mitochondria and chloroplasts were originally endosymbiotic bacteria or cyanobacteria. The arguments are convincing and although the hypothesis cannot be proven it is widely accepted.
