Cesarotti
[tʃeza'rɔtti], Melchiorre, italienischer Schriftsteller, * Padua 15. 5. 1730, ✝ Selvazzano 4. 11. 1808; war ab 1768 Professor für hebräische und griechische Sprache in Padua; seine Nachdichtung Ossians (»Le poesie di Ossian«, 2 Bände, 1763) hatte großen Einfluss auf V. Alfieri. In seiner Sprachphilosophie trat Cesarotti für eine nicht durch akademischen Vorschriften und literarischen Vorbilder gebundene Sprache ein; nur Vernunft und Geschmack sollten maßgebend sein.
