Hungarian form of STEPHEN (SEE Stephen). St Stephen of Hungary (975–1038), Duke of Hungary (997–1001) and first King of the Magyars (1001–1038), is the patron saint of Hungary. He continued the Christianization of the country begun by his father Géza, and is remembered as an effective ruler who created a strong and united nation.
