(1836-86)
Hebrew journalist of Russian origin. He settled in Palestine, where he edited the journal Ha-Levanon in 1863-4. The periodical reappeared under his editorship in Paris in 1865, and later in Mainz from 1872 to 1882. It supported Jewish law and the Jerusalem rabbis, and attacked the Haskalah and religious reform. After the Russian pogroms of 1881, Brill returned to Palestine and helped to found the colony of Ekron. As a result of a dispute he left the country and settled in London, where he founded the Yiddish newspaper Ha-Shulamit. He also published editions of several medieval texts.
