Artemis (griechisch)

* * *

Di|a|na (röm. Mythol.):
Göttin der Jagd.

* * *

I
Diana,

Diana: translation

Diana f
English: name borne in Roman mythology by the goddess of the moon and of hunting, equivalent to the Greek Artemis. In mythology she is characterized as both beautiful and chaste. Her name is of ancient and uncertain derivation. It probably contains a first element that is also found in the name of the supreme god Jupiter and in Greek Dionysios (see DENNIS (SEE Dennis)). It was adopted in Britain during the Tudor period as a learned name, a borrowing from Latin influenced by the French form DIANE (SEE Diane). It was not particularly popular until the end of the 19th century, and its increased frequency at that time has been attributed in part to George Meredith's novel Diana of the Crossways (1885). However, Dunkling casts doubt on this suggestion. In earlier centuries, some clergymen were reluctant to baptize girls with this pagan name, remembering the riots against St Paul stirred up by worshippers of Diana of the Ephesians (Acts 19: 24-41).
Short form: Di.

Diana: translation

   Goddess of the hunt, the daughter of Jupiter and Latona, and twin sister of Apollo. Diana's main trait is that she values her chastity. The crescent moon she wears on her head is one of her attributes, as are the nymphs and hunting dogs that accompany her. Among artworks that depict the goddess are Francesco Albani's Triumph of Diana (c. 1618; Rome, Galleria Borghese), which refers to the triumph of chastity; Domenichino's Diana and the Hunt (1617; Rome, Galleria Borghese), based on an episode in Virgil's Aeneid; and Benvenuto Cellini's Diana lunette relief, a sensuous nude meant as part of the décor in the Palace of Fontainebleau and now at the Louvre in Paris. Titian painted Diana and Actaeon (1559; Edinburgh, National Gallery of Scotland), the myth in which the hunter accidentally surprised the goddess at her bath. In retaliation, she transformed him into a stag to be mauled by his own dogs.

Diana: translation

   So called by the Romans; called Artemis by the Greeks, the "great" goddess worshipped among heathen nations under various modifications. Her most noted temple was that at Ephesus. It was built outside the city walls, and was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. "First and last it was the work of 220 years; built of shining marble; 342 feet long by 164 feet broad; supported by a forest of columns, each 56 feet high; a sacred museum of masterpieces of sculpture and painting. At the centre, hidden by curtains, within a gorgeous shrine, stood the very ancient image of the goddess, on wood or ebony reputed to have fallen from the sky. Behind the shrine was a treasury, where, as in the safest bank in Asia,' nations and kings stored their most precious things. The temple as St. Paul saw it subsisted till A.D. 262, when it was ruined by the Goths" (Acts 19:23-41)., Moule on Ephesians: Introd.
