(First Century BCE). The Aeneid is a Latin epic poem that tells the story of Aeneas, the hero who left Troy and traveled to Italy, where he established the Latin race. The text was among the sources utilized by patrons and artists to render historical and mythical scenes. One of those scenes is Aeneas, Anchises, and Ascanius Fleeing Troy, which was depicted by Federico Barocci in a painting (1598; Rome, Galleria Borghese), by Agostino Carracci in an engraving based on Barocci's rendering (1595; New York, Metropolitan Museum), and by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in sculpture (1618-1619; Rome, Galleria Borghese).
