[lateinisch Arnus] der, Fluss in Italien, 241 km lang, entwässert mit seinem Einzugsgebiet von 8 250 km2 etwa ein Drittel der Toskana, entspringt in 1 358 m über dem Meeresspiegel am Monte Falterona im Apennin, durchfließt die ehemaligen Seebecken und heutigen fruchtbaren Tallandschaften von Casentino, Arezzo und Valdarno in großem Südbogen, dann westwärts die Becken von Florenz und Empoli und mündet unterhalb von Pisa ins Ligurische Meer.Die Wasserführung weist starke Schwankungen auf (2,2 m3/s bei niedrigstem Niedrigwasser, bis 2 290 m3/s bei Hochwasser), die mittlere Wasserführung liegt im Unterlauf bei 100 m3/s. Mit seinen Feststoffmengen füllte der Arno die Bucht von Pisa auf. Hochwässer verursachten große Schäden, wie das höchste seit 1557 im November 1966. Die Wasserkräfte des Oberlaufs und der Engen werden genutzt.

ARNO, us, Neptuns Amme, welche den Namen von ἀρνέομαι, ich leugne, bekommen haben soll, weil sie, als Saturn sie gefraget, ob sie nicht besagten seinen Sohn habe, solches steif und fest geleugnet. Tzetz. ad Lycophr. v. 644. Von ihr soll sonst auch die Stadt Arne in Böotien den Namen bekommen haben, welche vorher Sinousa geheißen, Theseus in Corinth. lib. IV. ap. eumd. l. c. wiewohl doch auch andere dieser den Namen von ihren vielen Schafen, die im Griechischen Ἄρνες heißen, beygeleget wissen wollen. Crato ap. eumd. l. c. Bey allem dem aber wollen doch einige solche Arno lieber selbst Arnen genannt wissen. Potter. in Emendat. ad Tzetz. l. c. n. 2.
