[englisch, 'ki:bɔ:d; wörtlich »Tastenbrett, Klaviatur«], 1) Keyboards (Plural) — seit Ende der Sechzigerjahre Sammelbezeichnung für Musikinstrumente, die über eine Tastatur gespielt werden, also Orgel, E-Orgel, Klavier, E-Piano, Mellotron, Clavinet und die meisten Ausführungen des Synthesizers.Keine Berücksichtigung findet dabei die Art der Tonerzeugung, worin die genannten Instrumente erhebliche Unterschiede aufweisen (vergleiche Artikel zu den einzelnen Tasteninstrumenten). So verfügen Remote-Keyboards und Masterkeyboards gar nicht über die Möglichkeiten, selbst Klänge hervorzubringen. Sie erzeugen lediglich MIDI-Signale (MIDI) zur Steuerung von angeschlossenen elektronischen Klangerzeugern und -bearbeitungseinrichtungen. Den Musiker einer Bigband oder einer Gruppe, der oft mehrere Tasteninstrumente gleichzeitig zu bedienen hat, bezeichnet man als Keyboarder.
