['nɔrɪs], Frank, eigentlich Benjamin Franklin Norris, amerikanischer Schriftsteller, * Chicago (Illinois) 5. 3. 1870, ✝ San Francisco (Calif.) 25. 10. 1902; studierte Kunst in Paris sowie Literatur an der University of California und der Harvard University; Reporter im Burenkrieg (1895) und im Spanisch-Amerikanischen Krieg in Kuba (1898).In seinem von É. Zola beeinflussten, von Sozialkritik und romantischem Idealismus geprägten Werk, das eine eigenständige amerikanische Variante des Naturalismus darstellt, schildert er den verzweifelten Kampf der Menschen gegen die dämonische Kraft von Maschine und Kapital.
