1 §. Namen. Diesen leiten einige von ἔρις, der Zank, her, weil sie von den Göttern nur bey Streitigkeiten, wie Mercur bey Friedensdingen, gebrauchet wurde. Serv. ad Virg. Aen. V. v. 606. Andere holen ihn von εἴρω, ich sage. melde, weil sie eine Bothinn der Götter war, die andern deren Willen anzeigen müssen. Heraclit. Alleg. Hom. p. 448. Cf. Gyrald. Synt. VIII. p. 309. 2 §.Aeltern. Ihr Vater war Thaumas, des Pontus und der Erde Sohn, und die Mutter Elektra, eine Tochter des Oceans. Hesiod. Theog. v. 265. & Apollod. l. I. c. 2. §. 6.
3 §. Stand und Verrichtungen. Sie war eigentlich eine Dienerinn der Juno, der sie so wohl alles zubrachte, was sie hörete und sah, als auch unten an deren Throne saß, und auf ihre Befehle wartete. Callimach. Hymn. in Del. v. 216. & ad eum Frischlin. l. c. Sie wusch und reinigte dieselbe, als solche aus der Hölle zurück kam. Ovid. Metam. IV. 478. Insonderheit machte sie die ser Göttinn das Bette, in welchem sie und Jupiter schliefen, wobey sie aber allemal die Hände erst mit wohlriechenden Salben wusch. Theocr. Idyll. 17. v. 133. So forderte sie auch alle vor die Juno, welche diese verlangete, Apollon. IV. 757. und vertrat bey ihr fast eben die Stelle, welche Mercur bey dem Jupiter hatte. Nat. Com. l. VIII. c. 20. Gleichwohl war sie zuweilen auch dem Jupiter bedient Hom. Il. Θ. 398. & Ω. 173. Valer Flacc. IV. v. 75. Serv. ad Virgil. Aen. V. v. 606. Sie überbrachte aber auch das Bitten der Menschen, Hom. Il. Ψ 198. wurde insgemein in Streitigkeiten verschickt, und solche zwar nicht beyzulegen, sondern zu erregen. Serv. l. c. & ad Virgil. Aen. IX. v. 2. Ihre vornehmste Verrichtung aber war, daß sie die Seelen des Frauenvolkes aus deren Leibern entließ, welches sie dadurch bewerkstelligte, daß sie denenselben die fatalen Haare ab schnitt, mit welchen sie nicht ersterben konnten, welches doch sonst der Proserpina Werk war. Virg. Aen. IV. v. 694. & Taubmann. ad eumd. l. c. v. 698. Wie indessen Mercur so wohl aus der Hölle, als aus dem Himmel zum Bothen gebraucht wurde; so wurde hingegen Iris nur vom Himmel gesendet. Dabey bediente sie sich des Regenbogens zur Straße, auf dem sie ab und aufstieg. Ovid. Metam. XI. v. 632.
4 §. Bildung. Sie wird als ein seines Frauenzimmer in einem bunten Kleide vorgestellet. Ovid. Metam. I. v. 270. Man giebt ihr goldene oder safrangelbe Flügel. Hom. Il. Θ 398. Virgil. Aen. IV. v. 700. Dabey ist sie in allen so angeschickt, daß sie jederzeit fertig seyn kann, den ihr aufgetragenen Befehl auszurichten. Chartar. Imag. 25. a.
5 §. Deutung. Sie ist an sich nichts, als der Regenbogen, und wird sie für des Thaumas Tochter angegeben, weil der Regenbogen allerdings etwas wunderbares ist. Sie wird insonderheit für eine Dienerinn der Juno angegeben, weil Juno nichts, als die unterste dicke Luft ist, aus welcher so wohl Regen, als schön Wetter, herkömmt, beydes aber der Regenbogen anzuzeigen pfleget.
