AVERIA DE PONDERE

Spices and other fine goods weighed in units of one pound when (import) duty was paid, using the official scale or balance. From Latin averia de pondere is derived French avoirdupois = to have by weight. [< Lat. averia = goods, merchandise + pondere = to weigh]
