English, German, and Dutch: of unknown origin, possibly a Latinized form of a Provençal version of LOUIS (SEE Louis). It was relatively common in Italy in the Middle Ages, and has subsequently enjoyed some popularity among Roman Catholics in honour of St Aloysius Gonzaga (1568–91), who was born in Lombardy.
