Annibale: translation

Annibale m
Italian: bestowed in honour of the Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca (247–182 BC), who led a Carthaginian army from Spain across the Alps and into Italy to attack the Romans. He was eventually defeated by Scipio at Zama (202 BC), but not until he had shaken the Roman republic to its core. The name is sometimes chosen by Italians with strong regional loyalties, opposed to the centralizing tendencies of the government in Rome. The name is composed of the Phoenician elements hann grace, favour (and so distantly related to HANNAH (SEE Hannah)) + the name of the god Baal.
