BACHER, SIMON
(1823-91)
Hungarian poet and trans-lator. He lived in Budapest, where he was the treasurer of the Jewish community. He wrote poems in the florid style of the Haskalah and translated German and Hungarian poetry into Hebrew; his Zemirot ha-Aretz (Songs of the Land) is an anthology of trans-lations from Hungarian poetry. His translation of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's Nathan the Wise appeared in Vienna in 1865.
