BRUSSELMANS, MICHEL

(1886-1960)

   Born in Paris on 12 February 1886, composer Michel Brusselmans, a Belgian national, studied there and at the conservatory in Brussels. In 1911 he won the Prix de Rome. His impressionistic music is noted for its strong Flemish character. Brusselmans wrote music for orchestra (Flemish Rhapsody [1911]; Scenes from Provence [1932]), three symphonies, an oratorio (Jesus [1936]), songs, cantatas, chamber music, and compositions for organ. He died in Brussels on 20 September 1960.
