Einwohner (Metropolitan Area), das sind 73,2 % der Bevölkerung von South Australia; katholischer Erzbischofssitz, anglikanischer Bischofssitz.Adelaide ist kulturelles Zentrum, u. a. mit drei Universitäten (gegründet 1874, 1966 und 1991), Konservatorium, Staatsbibliothek, Kunstgalerien, Einwanderermuseum und dem »Adelaide Festival Centre«;

Wirtschaft:

wichtigster Industriestandort des Staates (Kraftfahrzeug- und Maschinenbau, Elektroindustrie);

Verkehr:

Verkehrsknotenpunkt mit internationalem Flughafen; im Nordwesten von Adelaide der Hafen Port Adelaide, im Süden der Ölhafen Stanvac.

Stadtbild:

Die Stadt ist großzügig im Schachbrettgrundriss angelegt und von Parks umgeben; die North Terrace im Zentrum ist die repräsentativste Straße (Parlamentsgebäude). Im Norden wurde 1955 die Satellitenstadt Elizabeth einbezogen, die Hänge der Mount Lofty Ranges besiedelt; entlang der Küste liegen Vororte (Seebäder).

Geschichte:

Adelaide wurde 1836 von Major W. Light gegründet und nach Königin Adelaide, der Frau des damaligen britischen Königs Wilhelm IV., benannt; als erste australische Stadt erhielt Adelaide 1840 eine eigene Gemeindeverwaltung.

English (from French Adélaïde): of Germanic origin, composed of the elements adal noble + heid kind, sort. It was borne in the 10th century by the wife of the Holy Roman Emperor Otto the Great. She became regent after his death and was revered as a saint. The given name increased in popularity in England during the 19th century, when it was borne by the wife of King William IV; she was the daughter of the ruler of the German duchy of Saxe-Meiningen. The Australian city of Adelaide was named in her honour.
