ZAMENHOF, LUDWIG LAZARUS

(1859-1917)

   Polish philologist. He was born in Bialystok, and lived in Warsaw. In 1887 he published a pamphlet that set out the fundamentals of Esperanto. In 1905 he convened the first international Congress of Esperantists. He translated the Bible as well as German, Russian and English literature into this new language.
