   Palestinian scholar. A disciple of Judah ha-Nasi, he was the author of a compilation of Jewish law. This collection explains obscure passages in the Mishnah and transmits traditions that differ from it. He valued natural science and encouraged the use of Greek, but was opposed to metaphysical speculation. He founded an academy in the south of Israel.
