COHEN, TOBIAS (TOBIAS THE DOCTOR)

(1652-1729)

   Turkish physician and author, of German origin. He was born in Metz. He served as court physician in Turkey until he was 62. He then went to Jerusalem to concentrate on the study of Torah. His Maaseh Tovyah is an encyclopaedia dealing with theology, astronomy, cosmography, geography, botany and medicine; it also contains references to Shabbetai Tzevi.
