English: this occurs in the Middle Ages as a Latinized form of a medieval Germanic name related to AVIS (SEE Avis). In modern use, however, it is borne almost exclusively by Roman Catholics, among whom it is bestowed in honour of St Theresa of Avila (1515–82).
