CELLER, EMANUEL

(1888-1981)

   American politician. Born in Brooklyn, he studied at Columbia Law School. He began his political career in 1922 when he was asked to run as the Democratic candidate for the tenth congressional district. He supported Franklin D. Rossevelt's New Deal, and Harry S. Truman's Fair Deal. After World War II, he was a supporter of political Zionism. In 1948 he became head of the House Judiciary Committee.
