(1940-1986)

   A native of the United States, Ellis began his fashion career in retail. In 1975, he launched his own label, Perry Ellis for Portfolio, a division of Manhattan Industries. Perry Ellis Sportswear was introduced in 1978. A recipient of both Coty Awards and Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Awards, Ellis continued at the helm of the business until his death. Marc Jacobs took over as head of design until the early 1990s. Each year the CFDA presents the Perry Ellis Award for New Design Talent in Ellis's honor.
