Piers: translation

Piers m
English: regular Middle English form of PETER (SEE Peter) (from the Old French nominative case, as against the oblique Pier). In the form PIERCE (SEE Pierce) it survived into the 18th century, although in part this may be a transferred use of the surname derived from the medieval given name. Piers was revived in the mid-20th century, perhaps partly under the influence of William Langland's great rambling medieval poem Piers Plowman (1367–86), in which the character of Piers symbolizes the virtues of hard work, honesty, and fairness.
