DIOGENES OF APOLLONIA

Diogenes is principally known for combining detailed empirical work, especially in biology, with the ambitious cosmological speculations characteristic of the Presocratics . He believed that everything was made of different combinations of the same basic stuff, aer, which had conscious and purposive attributes, and whose condensation and rarefaction created the different substances we know.
