   Agawa Hiroyuki is a writer of historical fiction and I-Novels and a literary critic. Agawa was born in Hiroshima, became interested in the works of Shiga Naoya during high school, and began writing novels after serving in the Japanese navy following his graduation from Tokyo University. His novel Haru no shiro (1952; tr. Citadel in Spring, 1990) won the Yomiuri Prize, and he has subsequently won the Noma Prize (1994), the Order of Cultural Merit (1999), and the Kikuchi Kan Prize (2007). His historical novels often deal with World War II.
