DERENBOURG, JOSEPH
(1811-95)
French orientalist. He worked as a domestic tutor in Amsterdam in 1835-8, and then settled in Paris. In 1852 he became corrector of the Imprimerie Nationale, and also catalogued the Hebrew manuscripts at the Bibliotheque Nationale. In 1877 he was appointed to a chair for rabbinic Hebrew language and literature at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes. He published studies of oriental languages and inscriptions as well as works on various Jewish subjects.
