French: from the past participle of the verb esmer to love (Latin aestimāre to value, esteem). In French this verb was absorbed by amer (see AMY (SEE Amy)) in the modern French form aimer, but has survived in a different sense in English aim (originally ‘estimate, reckon’). The name was introduced to Scotland in the 16th century, and is still occasionally used as a male given name in the English speaking world, where it is often spelled without the accent; it is occasionally also used as a female name.
