(reigned in Egypt 343–338 BC)
King of Persia and ruler of Egypt. Personal name Ochus. Son of Artaxerxes II and Statira. He took part in a war against Egypt around 361 BC and seized power upon the death of his father in 359 BC. He spent his reign quelling rebellions and consolidating his empire. He embarked on a campaign of reconquest of Egypt in 343 BC. He had a reputation as a cruel and ruthless ruler and was murdered by his close adviser, Bagoas, in 338 BC, who initially placed his son, Arses—officially Artaxerxes IV—on the throne before replacing him with Darius III.
