Spanish: of Germanic (Visigothic) origin. It is probably composed of the elements al all + war guard. The name is now also quite common in Italy, where the accent falls on the second syllable. It seems to have been taken up as a result of the influence of Verdi's opera The Force of Destiny (1862), in which a Peruvian character of this name appears.
