   American philosopher. Born in Brooklyn, he studied at City College and at Columbia University. He taught at New York University and later at the New School for Social Research. His works include: Pragmatism and the Tragic Sense of Life, John Dewey, an Intellectual, Common Sense and the Fifth Amendment and Out of Step.
