NUBIAN RESCUE CAMPAIGN

найдено в "Ancient Egypt"

The construction of the new Aswan High Dam, which commenced in 1960, resulted in the creation of Lake Nasser, a massive lake flooding much of Lower Nubia from the First Cataractat Aswan to almost the Third Cataract. Under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization, following an appeal by the Egyptian and Sudanese governments in 1959, an intensive archaeological campaign was organized by the international community from 1960–1965, involving 27 nations. Nineteen temples or monuments were removed from threatened sites, notably the temples at Abu Simbel, Dendur, and Philae, and also parts of the temples of Gerf Hussein and Semna.
