BAILLES, PLACE DES

   The square that was located in front of the Coudenberg Palace, the place des Bailles served as a link between the upper town and the lower town. It lay on the main east-west axis route through the city, and, as such, attracted traders who set up stalls here. It thus served as a focal place of commerce in Brussels in the medieval and early modern periods.
