1. used with a quantifier to denote s.o.'s age (the idiom may be omitted in translation): [Num]
⇒ years of age; [Num] years (months etc) old.
♦ Скончался он [мой отец], когда было мне всего лишь два года от роду, и не помню я его вовсе (Достоевский 1). Не [ту father] died when I was only two years old, and I do not remember him at all (1a).
♦ Между тем 17 ноября 1861 г., имея двадцать пять лет от роду, Добролюбов скончался (Набоков 1).Meanwhile, on November 17, 1861, at twenty-five years of age, Dobrolyubov died (1a).
♦ Это был человек лет тридцати двух-трех от роду, среднего роста, приятной наружности... (Гончаров 1). He was a man of about thirty-two or three, of medium height and pleasant appearance... (1a).
2. coll throughout one's entire life:
- in (all) one's life;
- [when used with a negated verb only] never in all one's born days.
♦ "Вы счастливы в игре", - сказал я Вуличу... "В первый раз от роду", - отвечал он... (Лермонтов 1). "You've got gambler's luck," I said to Vulich. "For once in my life," he said .. (Ic).
♦ "Этакого дурака я еще от роду не видывал..." (Гоголь 3). "I've never met a fool like that in all my life," said Chichikov (3a). "Never in all my born days have I seen such a fool" said Chichikov (3b).
