   French philosopher. Born in Budapest, he was professor at the univer-sities of Nancy, Rennes and Paris. He championed Alfred Dreyfus. In 1926 he served as president of the League for the Rights of Man. During World War II he was a member of the central committee of the French Resistance. His writings concern liter-ature, philosophy and political issues.
