[nach dem palästinensischen Gebirge zwischen Bethel und Sichem], Efra|im, Name eines israelitischen Stammes, dessen legendärer Ahnherr als Sohn Josephs und Enkel Jakobs galt. Ephraim gehörte zum Reich des Saul und seines Sohnes Eschbaal, nach dessen Ermordung es sich mit den anderen Nord- und Oststämmen Israels an David anschloss. Nach dem Tod Salomos wurde in Sichem die Personalunion mit dem judäischen Süden (1. Könige 12) aufgelöst; der Ephraimit Jerobeam I. machte Ephraim zum Kernstück des Nordreiches Israel. Von den Aramäerkriegen des Nordreiches kaum betroffen, blieb Ephraim nach der territorialen Dezimierung Israels durch die Assyrer 733/732 v. Chr. als halbselbstständiger Rumpfstaat übrig. Mit der assyrischen Eroberung von Samaria 722 v. Chr. endete seine politische Existenz, Ephraim wurde assyrische, später babylonische und persische Provinz. Damit verschwand der Stamm Ephraim aus der Geschichte; die später in seinem Gebiet ansässige Mischbevölkerung waren die Samaritaner.

Ephraim m

Biblical: name of one of the sons of Joseph and of one of the tribes of Israel. The name probably means ‘fruitful’ in Hebrew; it is so explained in the Bible (Genesis 41: 52 ‘and the name of the second called he Ephraim: For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction’). Unlike many Old Testament names, this was not particularly popular with the Puritans, and was used more in the 18th and 19th centuries than the 17th. It is still a common Jewish given name.

Ephraim: translation

Double fruitfulness ("for God had made him fruitful in the land of his affliction"). The second son of Joseph, born in Egypt (Gen. 41:52; 46:20). The first incident recorded regarding him is his being placed, along with his brother Manasseh, before their grandfather, Jacob, that he might bless them (48:10; comp. 27:1). The intention of Joseph was that the right hand of the aged patriarch should be placed on the head of the elder of the two; but Jacob set Ephraim the younger before his brother, "guiding his hands wittingly." Before Joseph's death, Ephraim's family had reached the third generation (Gen. 50:23).

Ephraim: translation

(fl. 19th-16th cent bce)

Israelite, younger son of Joseph. His name became that of one of the tribes of Israel and of the more northern of the two Israelite kingdoms. During the period of the Judges, the tribe of Ephraim claimed priority. When the northern tribes seceded after Solomon's death, the first king of the northern kingdom of Israel (Jeroboam I) belonged to this tribe. The prophets later referred to the House of Judah and the House of Ephraim.
