   Hebrew writer and lexicographer of Lithuanian origin. He went to Paris in 1878 to study medicine and in 1879 he published articles encouraging Jewish settlement in Palestine. In 1881 he emigrated to Jerusalem, where he edited Hebrew journals. He advocated the acceptance of Hebrew as a spoken language and in 1890 founded the Hebrew Language Council of which he was chairman. He wrote a comprehensive dictionary of ancient and modern Hebrew.
