Writ of summons: translation
Writs were issued by the king to summon tenants-in-chief and others of the baronage to attend parliament on a specified day. Some received regular summonses to each parliament; others received only one. In time the summonses were issued to some of barons for every session of parliament and this would become a right inherited by the son. From this a set body within the baronage was distinguished from the rest. It was this which created the Lords and the House of Lords.
