Arthur m

Of Celtic origin. King Arthur was a British king of the 5th or 6th century, about whom virtually no historical facts are known. He ruled in Britain after the collapse of the Roman Empire and before the coming of the Germanic tribes, and a vast body of legends grew up around him in the literatures of medieval Western Europe. His name is first found in the Latinized form Artorius and is of obscure derivation. The spelling with -th-, now invariably reflected in the pronunciation of the English name, is not found before the 16th century, and seems to represent no more than an artificial embellishment.The name became particularly popular in Britain in the 19th century, partly as a result of the fame of Arthur Wellesley (1769–1852), Duke of Wellington, partly because of the popularity of Tennyson's Idylls of the King (1842–85), and partly because of the enormous Victorian interest in things medieval in general and in Arthurian legend in particular. This interest also accounts for its adoption as a given name in France and elsewhere in Western Europe.

Graf der Bretagne, * 1187, ✝ nach 1202, ein Enkel König Heinrichs II. von England. Von Richard I. zunächst als Erbe vorgesehen, dann aber zu Gunsten Johanns Ohneland enterbt, trat er, um seinen Erbanspruch durchzusetzen, in die Dienste des französischen Königs Philipp II.August, wurde 1202 von König Johann gefangen genommen und wahrscheinlich auf dessen Befehl ermordet.

Präsident der USA (Republikanische Partei), * North Fairfield (Vermont) 5. 10. 1830, ✝ New York 18. 11. 1886; Rechtsanwalt, wurde wegen seiner Verdienste bei der Versorgung der Truppen im Staat New York während des Sezessionskrieges 1871 zum Zolldirektor des Hafens von New York bestellt, 1878 jedoch wegen Korruption und Ämterpatronage entlassen. 1880 zum Vizepräsidenten gewählt, leitete er nach dem Tod J. A. Garfields als Präsident der USA (1881-85) die Reform des öffentlichen Dienstes und die Modernisierung der Flotte ein.

Arthur (Artur), (20. Oct.) In einigen bürgerlichen Kalendern findet sich am 20. Oct. der Name Arthur (Artur), den wir, weil er im Leben öfter vorkommt und sogar auch als Taufname gebraucht wird, hier einfach anführen wollten, jedoch mit der ausdrücklichen Bemerkung, daß wir ungeachtet des genauesten Nachforschens weder in dem großen weitläufigen Werke der Bollandisten, noch sonst irgendwo einen »Heiligen« oder »Seligen« etc. dieses Namens haben finden können. Wahrscheinlich ist dieser Name entlehnt von dem sagenhaften König Arthur (Arthuir, Arthus, Artus), welcher im 5ten bis 6ten Jahrh. n. Chr. in England (Westwales) lebte und glücklich gegen die eingedrungenen Sachsen und Angeln kämpfte. Seine Geburt soll in das Jahr 453 fallen und sein Tod in das Jahr 542. Obwohl damals das Christenthum in England schon seit längerer Zeit Eingang gefunden hatte (vgl. S. Albanus³), so zeigt sich doch keine Spur davon, daß König Arthur demselben angehört habe. Es sollte daher nach den Anordnungen der Kirche ein solcher Name auch nicht als christlicher Taufname gebraucht werden.
