BRANDSTATTER, MORDECAI DAVID
(1844-1928)
Galician Hebrew novelist. He was a successful manufacturer and owing to the circles in which he moved, became interested in Haskalah. He contributed stories about Hasidic life in Galicia to the Hebrew journal Ha-Shahar. In his writing he ridiculed the Hasidim and the materialism of Galician Jewry. He later joined the Hibbat Zion movement and extolled Zionism in his stories.
