End-of-month settlement is the opposite from rolling settlement whereby the settlement date of a party's securities transaction instruction is deferred until the end of the month. Hence, it is possible to buy stocks without immediately settling and benefit from an anticipated rise of the stock or to short sell the stock not yet purchased.
