AMBROSE, ST
Ambrose, St: translation
(c. 340–397)
Ambrose was put forward as Bishop of Milan before being baptized; after his ordination he became a staunch defender of the privileges of the Church, and at one point excommunicated the Emperor Theodosius for a massacre. He opposed the Arian heresy, wrote on Christian ethics (De Officiis Ministrorum depends to some extent upon Cicero ), and was attacked by Hobbes.
