[englisch 'æsæm], Bundesstaat in Nordostindien, 78 438 km², (2001) 26,64 Mio. Einwohner; Hauptstadt ist Dispur. Assam umfasst die breite, vielfach sumpfige und von vielen Kanälen durchzogene Talaue des Brahmaputra, die im Norden von den Gebirgsketten des Himalaja (in Bhutan und im indischen Bundesstaat Arunachal Pradesh) begrenzt wird. Im Süden hat Assam in einem breiten Gebietsstreifen, der sich zwischen den indischen Bundesstaaten Meghalaya (im Westen) und Nagaland sowie Manipur (im Osten) erstreckt, Anteil am Gebirgsland. Im äußersten Süden (im Bereich der Stadt Silchar) reicht das Tiefland des Ganges-Brahmaputra-Deltas von Bangladesh her nach Assam hinein.Hauptwirtschaftszweig ist der um 1830 eingeführte Teeanbau. Außerdem liefert Assam Reis, Zuckerrohr, Hartholz, Jute. Von Bedeutung sind beträchtliche Erdöl-, Erdgas- und Kohlevorkommen. Petrochemische und Kunstdüngerindustrie, Jute-, Baumwoll- und Seidenspinnereien, Zucker- und Papierindustrie.

Geschichte:

Das altindische Königreich Kamarupa wurde von verschiedenen, einander oft bekriegenden Dynastien regiert und war der Gupta-, dann der Paladynastie tributpflichtig, bis es im 13. Jahrhundert von den Ahom erobert wurde, nach denen Assam seinen Namen erhielt. Sie beherrschten das Land bis Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts; 1817 wurde es von den Birmanen, 1826 von den Briten erobert, war 1874-1905 selbstständige Provinz Britisch-Indiens, 1905-24 Teil der Provinz Bengalen, dann wieder selbstständig. Bei der Teilung Indiens (1947) kam der vorwiegend von Muslimen bewohnte Distrikt von Sylhet an Ost-Pakistan (das heutige Bangladesh). Der bei weitem größte Teil Assams wurde gemäß der Verfassung von 1950 Gliedstaat der Indischen Union. 1963 kam der Distrikt Naga Hills an den neu gebildeten Unionsstaat Nagaland. Nach einer Revolte von Gebirgsstämmen in den Distrikten Garo Hills und United Khasi and Jaintia Hills entstand 1970 aus diesem Gebiet der autonome Staat Meghalaya innerhalb von Assam (seit 1972 eigener Bundesstaat). 1972 wurde der Distrikt Mizo Hills als Unionsterritorium »Mizoram« ausgegliedert (seit 1987 Bundesstaat) sowie die North East Frontier Agency in Arunachal Pradesh umbenannt (zunächst Unionsterritorium, seit 1987 ebenfalls Bundesstaat).

A Prefecture Apostolic in the ecclesiastical province of Calcutta, India, established in 1889.It is served by the "Society of the Divine Saviour," whose mother-house is at Rome. The priests have a residence at Shillong. Assam includes the civil province of Assam, with Bhuthan and Manipur. The native population is 7,000,000. The Catholics number 1,800, and are attended by 6 secular and 10 regular priests. There are chapels in Shillong, Gowhati, Bondashill, Railing, Laitkinsew, Silchar, Cheerapoonjee, Lamin, and elsewhere, in all 25 chapels and 19 stations. There are 15 elementary schools; 300 pupils, boys and girls; 2 orphanages under the direction of the Sisters of the Society of the Divine Saviour; 4 charitable dispensaries, 1 asylum for aged women, and one small hospital at Shillong. The non-Catholic sects number 17, and count 18,000 adherents.
